Now, thousands make video games professionally, and many are seeing a huge amount of success. The popularity of a career in video game design is exploding, as a result of this growth, bachelors programs, master degree online program and supplementary design classes are being offered by an increasing number of outlets. The industry is moving quickly, as Wiis and Playstation 3’s invade America’s living room: video games have become a $10 billion industry, as of 2009. Here are some academic plans that could land you a job in the industry.

The course of education leading to a gaming career is changing quickly, and institutional programs are extremely diverse. One of the best known video game design master’s programs is at Full Sail Real World Education, in Winter Park, Florida. The master’s program offered at the school in Game Design teaches students how to produce a game, handle corporate responsibilities with management at a studio, and lead a creative team.

If you want a program close to the industry hub, DigiPenn, in Redmond, Washington, is a stone’s through from video game giants like Nintendo America and Microsoft. The school is considered, along with Full Sail Real World Education, to be one of the top five video game programs in the world, and the proximity to real-life industries improves students’ chances of finding internships while finishing their degree, as well as jobs after they’ve completed the master’s.

There are even Ivy League master’s degree in video games. Penn started a program in 2004 in Computer Graphics and Game Technology. Alumni from the program have gone on to work with Pixar and the Harry Potter franchise on graphics, and 10% of Dreamworks technical directors are graduates of the program. There are 40 students in the year-long program. The degree focuses mainly on design theory, so it can be applied to both graphics in film and in video games.

If you’re interested in something a little less technical, check out the program at the University of Utah. This interdisciplinary degree is in entertainment arts and engineering games studio. Students work with advisors from both the School of Computing, as well as the Film and Media Arts Department. The University of Utah is a great option for those who don’t just want to design video games but also want to produce and direct them.

Video game design can be an incredibly lucrative field, with the average salary of a employee in the industry falling just barely below six figures. Getting a master’s degree in a video game-related discipline is a great way to learn concepts, network, and get your foot in the door. So take that, moms of the world. Video games are good for something after all. I would still advise not sitting too close to the TV screen though.

More than once in the last 6 or 7 years, I’ve received messages in the mail that tell me either my information or my children’s personal data has been lost or stolen. A laptop stolen from Sutter was the latest example to potentially affect me directly. I’m usually baffled as to why companies allow machines out in the “wild” to contain personal data and not also have more sophisticated encryption techniques.

Many are freeware and/or open source – Take TrueCrypt for example. It’s free and according to their FAQ, “it could take thousands or millions of years (depending on the length and quality of the password or keyfiles, on the software/hardware performance, algorithms, and other factors)” to crack the password. I’ll grant that rolling out desktop encryption doesn’t happen by magic and that it takes time money and resources to do it. However, the reputational risk of an event like this has to outweigh saving a few bucks on rolling out at encryption to your various mobile devices.

Yesterday, I received a credit card application for my 2 year old from Discover. As a 2 year old, we’ve had very little opportunity to order anything in her name which is one way a company might have put her on a mailing list. She’s obviously never applied for credit, so that’s not it. The only people that should have her full name are hospitals, friends and possibly acquaintances on Facebook. The latter shouldn’t have her address since I keep that stuff private. The final option could be, but is not necessarily, that someone applied for credit in her name but frankly that seems relatively unlikely given that the Discover application came to our address. Our mail box is locked and I shred everything so it seems a little farfetched that there would be any tampering with our mail.

Still, I’d rather be safe than sorry.

So, I called Discover and asked them for a couple things –

Do not solicit – I requested they add my daughter to a list that tells them, “we don’t want your credit applications.”

Who gave you the info – Having some background knowledge on mail campaigns, I know that usually lists are purchased from “somewhere.” Companies don’t just make up names to solicit so that info had to come from some place. The representative was not 100% sure but said that they often get lists from Equifax.

So my next step was to see what is on her Equifax report.

If you don’t know, you have a right to a free credit report from each of the major credit bureau companies every 12 months. There are 3 of them: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. You could set yourself up such that you have a free credit report every 4 months if you staggered your requests. For example if I pull a credit report from Experian every January, one from TransUnion every May and one from Equifax every September, I could stay fairly up-to-date on my credit. Granted each one may have slightly different information but it sure is better than not reviewing your information.

With this information I headed over to AnnualCreditreport.com to try to pull a report as the legal representative of my 2 year old daughter. I’ve used this site to pull my own free report in the past so I know it works and that it is legit. However, I filled in her data and received this error.

Due to security and privacy reasons, credit report requests of persons under 13 years of age must be requested by their parent or guardian and additional identification documentation must be provided which cannot be submitted through this website. Instructions for completing these requests can be accessed through this website by clicking mail request for a child under 13. If this date of birth was entered in error, please try again.

Sigh. Some things are just never easy.

I think I understand the necessity of making this a “mail only” process… but not really. Seems that they could pretty easily facilitate an automated process of verifying my identity. That’s a battle for another day. According to the linked page “The credit reporting agencies do not knowingly maintain credit files on minor children. If you suspect that your minor child’s information has been used fraudulently, you should contact the credit reporting agencies directly and report the illegal use of your child’s information to law enforcement.”

The page also provides specific instructions on what information to send to request a credit report for a minor child. I will be following these for each of my children who are under 18 (4 of them) and thus making sure no one is attempting to use their identities fraudulently.

For kicks, I also checked the sites of each of the bureaus to see if they provided any easier way to get to the information I need. The only one of the major 3 that seemed to have a plan for keeping my kids safe was Equifax. They have a product called – Equifax Complete™ Family plan that costs 29.95/month. I have not tried it so I cannot yet tell you how easy or difficult it is to use, but they seem to be the only ones offering this type of product.

Next Steps –

I’ll be requesting the information for my each of the bureaus and I’ll report back on how easy or difficult is the process. You might consider checking up on your own kids to make sure they are safe and of course be sure to monitor your own credit. It’s free and it could save you a lot of money and time. According to givemebackmycredit.com, a study by Javelin Strategy and Research indicated “the year 2011 saw a disturbing 13% increase in the number of cases of identity theft reported by participants in comparison to the number of cases reported in 2010.“ To avoid the headache of identity theft or other fraudulent use of your credit, take some steps to protect yourself by monitoring what these big credit companies are tracking related to your finances.

Here’s my to-do list

Monitor my credit file(s) at annualcreditreport.com

If I have any suspicion of my children’s personal data being inappropriately used, request their credit file via mail

If I receive credit solicitations, call to have them removed

Shred credit solicitations before throwing in the trash

What steps are you taking to protect your credit file and your identity?

A Bit of Background…

I take a look at some of the most iconic examples of gaming real estate, and try to estimate how much they’d fetch on the market – before they were destroyed by rampaging bands of heroes…

Virtual environments can shape your gaming experience. Truly stunning or iconic buildings from computer games can stay with you for years, remaining recognisable for decades.

But how much do they cost?

My colleagues said I had lost my grip on reality when I asked this question. In answer, I simply adjusted my spectacles, wiped some of the remaining yoghurt from my chest, re-caged my attack-ferrets, and got to ‘work’.

The result of this ‘work’ sits before you now, an honest and accurate appraisal of some of the hottest pieces of gaming property to have ever existed.

Enjoy this fun take on video game real estate!

Scholomance –World Of Warcraft

Converted schoolhouses are hot property these days, and this lakeside property is no exception to that rule. The steady stream of visitors to this unique residence peaked some time ago, but there are still a fair number of people who drop by to check it out.

Oddly, though, despite the apparent interest, there has still been no sale.

The building is enormous, with a number of rooms for entertaining, dining, or just kicking back with an ancient grimoire on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Its distance from the nearest city, the troubled city of Stratholme, combined with its proximity to satanic magic and liches, make this a tough property to seal any deal on.

Fixing the place up with some Sedlec-style chandeliers and sorting out the persistent problems with damp, mould, and the living dead would certainly go some way to lifting the value of this property to where it belongs, but at present I couldn’t see it fetching more than £325,000, as it is one hell of a restoration project.

Unfortunately, the current owners don’t seem that interested in selling. They’re more the “world domination” types. Looks like no-one will be collecting those juicy estate agent fees for a while yet…

End of Level Castle – Mario

A classic red-brick in a Victorian ‘folly’ style, this detached house is in a desirable rural area with spectacular views of rolling hills, and good access to local services (especially plumbers).

Sadly, access is only from one direction, and getting back to the property from town at peak times can be an absolute nightmare. It’s also a comparatively small building, next to the larger and more foreboding properties nearby, and there are an awful lot of similar buildings standing empty and bringing down property values.

Ownership is hotly contested, and the property changes hands frequently between local business concerns.

This is a fairly desirable residence, but I wouldn’t think about paying more than about £230,000 for it. Consult your local planning office for more information on building restrictions.

The Hive – Starcraft

The Hive is the main structure of the Zerg forces in Starcraft, a race of aggressive insect-like aliens with a strictly hierarchical structure. They are not particularly neighbourly, and may attempt to infect or assimilate you.

Kerrigan, Queen of the Zerg, by Glenn Batuyong

Due to the extreme difficulty involved in getting close enough to properly appraise the Hive, we only know a few things to help determine its value.

Firstly, it uses state-of-the-art and extremely sustainable bio-technology for the majority of its processes, making it incredibly environmentally friendly.

Secondly, it boasts unparalleled levels of security, with a reported crime rate of exactly zero.

It also features wonderful in-built temperature regulators, leaving guests feeling warm and safe, if a little sticky.

I would value this property at about £500,000 for the eco-conscious, but it might not be the right property for you if you have hobbies such as breathing or feeling emotions other than a bottomless lust for domination.

The City 17 Citadel – Half Life 2

This particularly arresting (ha) property can offer enormous grounds, startling original artworks-cum-power-supplies, and comes with a full body of staff attached.

Deep in the heart of down-town City 17, the Citadel is handy for local transport and plotting unspeakable acts of degradation and enslavement.

It also has an entire room devoted to the storage of hats, to which ordinary personnel are not allowed.

There may be issues with the local council over the unorthodox methods with which this building was constructed, with limited if any planning application sought, but the on-site staff should be able to deal with all queries and complaints in a most satisfactory manner.

The main factor in judging this high-tech building’s price is its enormous height. At roughly 2.5 kilometres tall, extrapolating from the prices of other skyscrapers, I would not accept less than £900 million, making this well beyond the budget of the average taciturn renegade scientist.

Other Iconic Buildings

I know I missed out a fair share of iconic buildings from this list, for brevity’s sake.

Some of the buildings in Bioshock’s “Rapture” are well worth a look, if you’re interested in underseas investment, while Arkham Asylum, as featured in recent Batman games, looks set to be repurposed any day now due to the incompetence of its current owners.

Ultimately, though, I feel that many of these properties are far too volatile for you to simply go and sell house online in an attempt to move into one of these places. Problems such as subsidence and small but plucky bands of mismatched rag-tag heroes are too frequently under-reported to buyers, so be sure you get a look at the place and eradicate any rebel movements before moving in.

If you could be sure of the destruction of your enemies, though, and I mean really sure, what gaming residence would you buy?

Please tell me in the comments!

When picking a new laptop or computer there are so many choices that it can become difficult to know
what to do and where to start. Each one has difference features, price points, functions and pros and cons.
However, that type of indecision is what helps make the right decisions.

For instance, you may be looking at the new Ultrabook or are thinking about a certain style or functionality
of a laptop that you want. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the perfect fit for your
lifestyle and affordability. These include:

Features: The main features that you want to be able to use should be one of your first thoughts when choosing any piece of electronic equipment. Whether you want it to perform certain tasks or you simply want to be able to download the latest music, ask yourself what you want out of the equipment you plan to buy. Make sure that you are aware of any “add-on” features that may cost you more after your initial investment. These can include software upgrades, trial periods on virus protection and more.

Affordability: Price point is typically a main part of any purchase. Unless you are incredibly wealthy, the price plays a major role, but it is not the only aspect to look at. You should also look at the long-term picture. For instance, you would not want to buy something cheap only to find out that for a little bit more you could have had an extended warranty. Sometimes a few dollars makes all the difference in the world. As mentioned, be aware of add-on features that will drive the cost higher. Ensure that the price you see includes everything you need in your new equipment.

Lifestyle: This may seem like an odd thing to keep in mind but it really does make a difference. For example, if you travel a lot then you will want something lighter such as the Ultrabook. You may also have an affinity for brand names so you will search by brand first, then choose your features and price point.

Regardless of whether you plan to buy in the near future or are considering it at a later date, take note that
any electronic equipment may have changes made from when you did your research to when you actually
buy it. You should brush up on the knowledge you had when you made your first research into the product.
With that in mind, have fun with your research instead of making it a chore. Look for specifics you would
enjoy on your new laptop (virus protection, etc.) and then expand on that in your search for a new one.

Mom is special and your gift for Mother’s Day should reflect this. But if your mom is a geek at heart and an off-the-cuff gift won’t do, see if one of our four ideas below cuts the mustard.

We found these online via various retailers and all are perfect for surprising and delighting mom this Sunday. Have a look and let us know which one is your fave?

1. Wonder Woman Heels

Bet you’ve never seen these before. How totally awesome is this, a pair of custom made comic book hero heels in full stiletto glory. Pow Kaboom! Wow! This pair of Wonder Woman heels has the comic book heroine front and center and is covered from heel to toe in images from the popular female centric comic strip. We found these online via Etsy (from seller Designed4Divas) based in Ohio and they’re available in sizes 5 to 11 and in other comic hero styles as well.

2. Easy Wine Bottle Opener

Moms need a break and what better way to take one than with a nice glass of Chardonnay. However some bottles are quite hardy and difficult to pop open, that’s where the easy wine bottle opener comes in – to save the day. Best thing about this gift idea is that it won’t set you back too far, as we found it online via Think Geek for less than $10. This bottle opener allows you to uncork your bottle easily and also serve with the various built-in extensions on the device.

3. Kindle Fire For Mom

The iPad is an awfully pretty gadget and massages that ego spot nicely, however not many can shell out the $500 to $800 it costs to get one. However there;s a nice alternative that is equally as cool and can perform many of the functions that the iPad can. Her name is Kindle Fire and she comes from planet Amazon. Her cost? Under two hundred dollars shipped. She comes with a beautiful 7 inch full color screen great for watching videos, movies, recipes and magazines. Your mom can also easily and quickly surf the web, listen to music and so much more.

4. Designer Netbook

Netbooks have been pushed to the side ever since tablets came on the scene, however we still think they serve purpose and some manufacturers have created designer editions that any Mom would love. We particularly like the 10 inch Vivienne Tam edition – see one below.

There are lots of awesome geeky gift ideas for Mom this Mother’s Day, simply look around on sites like Think Geek, Amazon and Etsy and you’ll find plenty to browse through.

My kids tried this one before me and they only played it for a couple days before moving on to other apps. I figured I would give it a go and see why it didn’t hold their attention too long.

Game play is fairly straightforward – you control wait staff in Garfield’s Diner. You start with one waiter (Jon) who prepares the food and handles the cashier duties for the diner. You can buy additional wait staff with in-game currency to help you out when the diner starts to get busy. When customers come in you have to tap and drag them to the station where they want to eat (depicted by a speech bubble over their head), then you have to tap them to make a waiter move to that location to prepare food. The customers, when finished with that portion of the meal will either want to go to another food station or they will want to check out. Your task is to keep them happy and collect the maximum number of dollars and you do this by making sure they get their food before they get angry and leave. If you bump up the game speed, you get bonuses on the money and the happiness.

You can and should upgrade your food stations. Upgrades allow for faster prep time as well as higher dollars. Likewise with the wait staff, they should be upgraded so they walk and serve faster.

Entertainment Value 2/5

There’s no major strategy to the game. You basically have to move your fingertip quickly and accurately when placing customers and assigning the wait staff. At first, it’s funny to watch the different characters but it gets old and repetitive fast. There’s a decent variety of characters but no big variation in game play as you progress.

The more frustrating thing about the game is the in-game currency system. To purchase more than 2 helpers you need a lot of the premium currency and with this game it’s not at all easy to earn. The ‘free’ in game currency is used to upgrade stations but at some point you need additional people to keep the shop running and you would have pay real $ to get the in-game currency so you can hire them.

Ease of Use 3.5/5

The early levels are pretty easy but as you move through the game, the screen gets cluttered with the different food stations. It would probably play better on the iPad but on the iPhone and iPod touch it starts to get a little messy. Tapping and dragging the customers can be troublesome when working on the small screen and if you make a mistake you lose time. Losing time means losing customers so that can be troublesome.

Likelihood of Replay 1/5

I’m deleting after the review. If I see some updates come through, I may reload but probably not.

Graphics and Sound 3.5/5

The cartoon style graphics stay true to what I would expect from a Garfield cartoon. They look decent but, as mentioned above, the screen clutters very quickly as more and more customers enter the Diner. The sounds are fine; there’s a simple, light soundtrack that plays while you are in the diner mode. Each station has different sound effects that run while you are preparing food/drinks.

Overall 2.5/5

The game has some basic entertainment value but not much. As I play, I feel like the creators are more focused on pulling money out of my pocket than creating a fun, entertaining game. While I was trying to take screen shots for the review, I accidentally clicked on no fewer than 4 advertisements. The placement of the large ads (right in the center of the screen and on top of the “Play” button), makes it very easy to tap and ad even when you don’t mean to. I’m still not sure why the kids didn’t want to play the game after a couple days, but now I have my own reasons.

Unless you’re a Garfield collector, I think you can pass on this one.

Itunes Link

Current price: Free, with a lot of in-app purchases.

We started working on Anybeat a year ago this month, and launched our invite-only beta 4 months later, in September. Over the last 8 months we have built many features, fixed many bugs, but most importantly met many amazing people that have helped us build this community. Many of you have become our dear friends, and it has been wonderful to meet some of you in the physical world.

It is therefore bittersweet for us to announce that Anybeat is getting purchased by another company, that will be repurposing it to address a different type of community, and will not be operating Anybeat as is.

We are going to keep the servers up and running for two weeks to let you access any photos or other data that you may have posted, and have also set up a Google Group that will allow us all to stay in touch afterwards – https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/anybeat-members

Thank you for all of your encouragement, support, creativity, and passion

- The Anybeat Team.

Amusingly, former users are taking to Facebook and Google groups for communicating possible alternatives. Since Anybeat was touted as an anonymous alternative to Facebook and Google, it’s interesting to see users taking to those same sites while they seek alternatives.

So now that this social network has a buyer, this writer wonders if any information transfers have taken place since the privacy policy states the following – (my emphasis added)

Business Transfers: In some cases, we may choose to buy or sell assets. In these types of transactions, customer information is typically one of the business assets that are transferred. Moreover, if Company, or substantially all of its assets were acquired, or in the unlikely event that Company goes out of business or enters bankruptcy, customer information would be one of the assets that is transferred or acquired by a third party. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of Company may continue to use your Personal Information as set forth in this policy.

The email from Anybeat says “Anybeat is getting purchased” so, maybe not information has been transferred yet. We’ve inquired with Anybeat as to whether any personal/private data has been provided to the purchaser as of yet. This post will be updated with any new information regarding the transfer of data.

Technology is coming on in leaps and bounds and now we all expect to have it at our finger tips. This means mobile phone apps to get creative and busy with! Whether it’s making videos to edit and share, streaming them to watch or just to allow you to be social with your friends and family, then don’t panic, there is an app for that! This article looks at three different video apps which offer you three different uses depending on your needs. Firstly, the social butterfly, who simply wants to upload quick videos to the social networking sites for friends and family, then we look at people who want to test the waters and get creative and get professional, and finally the ones who just want to stream and watch!

Klip – Social Video Sharing

Klip is a very popular iPhone app which allows you to record video and edit with effects in real time capture mode and it a perfect example of social video sharing. You can upload your videos (or just select pre-recorded videos from your library to edit and use) and share them to your chosen social networking sites which include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the Klip library itself. With Klip’s latest instalment, video time has increased up to 3 minutes of film rather than snap shot seconds. This means you can express yourself more freely and evenly so you can really get your message across with less rushing! It’s because of Klip’s wonderful simplicity and ease to use which makes it perfect for social video fans. Take a video, add an effect if you wish, click upload to where ever you want it. Perfect!

1st Video – Creative and Professional Video App

1st Video is part of the VeriCorder company and offers a range of great features aimed at those who want and need a slightly more professional feel for their creativity. Aimed for iPhones and iPad users, particularly within professional circles, such as journalists who can hook it up to their newsrooms, this smart app allows you harness great quality features and editing options. Whether you want full control of your video capture, editing, sound system, broadcasting or podcast options, this app allows you to get professional on the go. And if that wasn’t quite professional enough, you can upgrade to their “1st Video Consumer” app which has even more professional video editing options. This app really does offer great, high quality video and video control for those who want to do more than just play around.

Babelgum – The Stream and Watch Video App

Babelgum is also an iPhone app for those who just want to watch rather than make, which is something that can be overlooked in video phone apps these days. Not everyone wants to get creative and make, some people are happy to appreciate thee forts others have gone to and watch them instead! This is exactly what Babelgum allows you to do. It allows you to stream TV shows, comedy, music, short films, animation and documentaries all to your phone. It allows you to create lists of videos you like and even share them with friends over social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. This video app allows you to watch what ever you like, keep them safe so you can watch them again and share them with people you know would love them too, all from your phone. Why worry about making videos when you can simply just relax and watch them?!

Key Take Away

There are video apps galore out there but finding one that suits you is important. Think about the type of networking you do and what you want out of your videos to locate the apps which best suit your needs. If you like to make videos for friends and family, go for apps like Klip, if you want a more professional or commercial video app, 1st Video’s are great. And for those who want to relax and watch after a long day or are stuck on a train, video apps like Babelgum allow you to enjoy videos with no effort on your part. There really is something out there for everyone, you just need to know where to look.

It is the clarity, ease and elegance of performing a task to reach its desired goal. It is very important to focus on usability and user-experience in the process of creating high-quality mobile applications. Increasing interaction with the user makes the product emotionally pleasing and desirable. Usability testing helps learn from the customer’s perspective and develop better apps.

Basic guidelines for a better usability

1) Identify user’s needs: If you are looking to develop a user friendly mobile application, it is very important to think like a user yourself. Try and identify what you want, what kind of application would appeal to you and what design applications will attract you. Once the basic layout is ready, further designing will be quite an easy task.

2) Font size: Looking at the range of screen size available in the market, it is essential to provide users with a range of font size as well. This would help them adjust the font size in accordance with their screen. Flexibility is the key behind a successful application as no two mobile devices will have the exact same features.

3) Indicate button function: Button indications should be clear and make sense to your audience. The user should be able to browse through the application interface effectively rather than spending hours in understanding its functionality.

4) Resolution: Handling this might be difficult as it is not possible to predict the resolution upfront. Creating an ideal resolution will help reach out to a lot of users.

5) Contrast and color choices: A proper contrast and color scheme is what makes an application attractive and appealing. Never over-do the graphic. Give your application a soothing color effect. Using proper coloring gives a compelling manner to provide information thereby ignoring the need for additional space. Maintaining a proper contrast will not only make things look pretty, but also provide guided information.

6) Keyboard selection: With the introduction of touch screens and QWERTY keypads, it has become more important to target a specific group of users or provide flexibility in keyboard selection. If you are looking to develop an application with flexibility to work on a computer and a mobile, then you are committing a big mistake. Mobile devices should never be considered as mini computers while developing an application. Adjusting various features like color, font resolution can be flexible up to some extent but will never provide the same effect as it does originally.

7) Testing: Now that the designing and developing is done, be a user yourself and test your mobile application. It is very important to test the smooth functionality of your application and check how usable is your design. Thorough testing will help you identify small glitches and fix them accordingly.

Looking at the popularity of Androids, iOS and Symbian, the need of developing usable mobile apps has reached new heights and developing user friendly applications is the key to surviving in this ever-growing market. You should ultimately work on providing a rich and pleasurable experience to your users.
