0908PIXEL_x600A new digital-camera imaging system–a semiconductor sensor and associated electronics–is the first with 60 megapixels. Previously, semiconductor slabs large enough to fit that many pixels without degrading image quality were prohibitively expensive. The new sensor still isn’t cheap, but it allows digital cameras to meet and even exceed the performance of the medium- format film cameras many professionals prefer.
